Carolina Crime Writers Virtual Panel
The Orange County Public Library hosts a panel discussion via Zoom with local crime writers, J.G. Hetherton, Nora Gaskin and E. Vernon F. Glenn. Writers will discuss their works, best practices and building processes during a pandemic. The event is free but registration is required. Fairy House Friday
In lieu of normal activities for pediatric patients at the UNC Hospitals and Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill, Wonder Connection hosts Fairy Friday, where all children and teens can make a fairy house at home. The nonprofit, which empowers pediatric patients by providing science-based activities, encourages participants to tag and share their creations with its social media pages. In addition, the nonprofit offers fun video activities, project instructions, and also a Facebook live storytime on fairy house stories and building tips.
Freight Train Blues 2020 Concert Series
Carrboro Town Commons and the Hillsborough-based nonprofit Music Maker Relief Foundation host Hiss Golden Messenger for its third virtual concert as part of its Freight Train Blues Concert Series. The band will broadcast some its most popular folk hits from 6-7pm live on Facebook, YouTube and WCHL 97.9FM. The event, which celebrates Elizabeth Cotten’s contributions to American roots music, benefits “elderly roots musicians living in poverty.”
Carolina Moonlight Garden Party
The North Carolina Botanical Garden hosts its annual fundraiser online to celebrate the Year of the Wild Flower. The Garden invites attendees for an evening of guided tours, comedy, music and more. The event is open to all, but capacity is limited to 500 households. Even though the event is free they are still encouraging donations to help with conservation efforts.
Live Stream: “The General” Live Score By Tim Carless
The ArtsCenter presents its first ever live virtual event in collaboration with Tim Carless. The Carrboro-based performer will present a new solo guitar accompaniment to the 1926 silent film, “The General.” The free performance is appropriate for all ages.
Virtual 2020 Senior Exhibition: This Was The Place
Help the UNC graduating studio art seniors celebrate their semester-long work through a virtual exhibit. Twenty different pieces, which explore different mediums and disciplines, will be displayed online through Aug. 31.
North Carolina Science Festival
Despite the cancellation of physical events, the Morehead Planetarium & Science Center produced NC Science Fest, a variety of educational and entertaining events and activities. Some activities like Avian Home Adventure introduce participants to raptors from the Carolina Raptor Center. There are also live events like The Brief History of Sourdough, which includes tips for quarantine baking. Registration varies by each event.
