The idea of “Just Do It” is more than a Nike slogan from the past. It’s also a trusted time management tool for getting ‘er done. Sometimes, tasks that take 5 minutes or less are better to knock out now so they don’t pile up. Numerous short to-do’s, when combined, can take all weekend to accomplish! Most of these nagging little tasks can be completed quickly if you just do it: take out the trash, make the bed, put away the clothes from today, fold the laundry, empty the dishwasher, wash the dirty pot, put away the shoes, wind up the cord, wash off the tool, put away the books…you get my point.
I often preach this idea of “just do it” when something is going to be quick. But there is another three-word mantra that takes this tool even further – “finish the job.” Often I go into clients’ homes and find that much of the clutter that has accumulated consists of stuff that is about 80% done. A shirt that was mended but never ironed, a bill that was opened and even stamped but not put in the mailbox, an invitation responded to but not put on the calendar, dishes or laundry that are clean but not put away. Individually, these tasks won’t take long to complete. But when they’re viewed all together, they can quickly overwhelm you.
I think we can all take our organization to the next level when we start to practice this idea of “finish the job.” When tempted to leave something undone, it can be helpful to pause and ask “what can I do right now to finish this job?” That last 20% may take just a few minutes to complete and will help avoid the pile up of partially completed jobs that add up.
