Cosmic Rays Experimental Film Festival – Thursday, 7pm; Friday 5pm – Experimental filmmakers rejoice! Cosmic Rays presents a two-day series of five avant-garde films at the Varsity Theatre on Franklin Street, including a live audio-visual performance from artist Rose Kallal and a curated selection by film programmer David Dinell.
David Collins – Thursday, 7pm – David Collins, author of “Accidental Activists: Mark Phariss, Vic Holmes, and Their Fight for Marriage Equality in Texas”, comes to Flyleaf Books to discuss his new book.The book details a same-sex Texan couple’s fight for marriage equality and discusses the social, political and judicial complexities and challenges they had to face.
Vieux Farka Touré – Thursday, 8pm – Legendary Malian guitar player, Vieux Touré, often referred to as “The Hendrix of the Sahara,” graces The ArtsCenter’s stage this weekend. Touré’s skill on the guitar brings the spiritual, yet earthly heart of Mali to Chapel Hill for an unforgettable performance.
RISING exhibition – On display until June – Come out to the Center for the Study of the American South to view this unique multimedia exhibition exploring the impact of climate change on coastal lives and livelihoods. Oral histories and photography combine in this compelling exhibit. Make sure to come before it travels on to the coast and reunites with its birthplace!
Joywave – Friday, 8pm – Indie rock quintet Joywave brings its second full-length release, “Content,” to the Cat’s Cradle stage this Friday night. After appearing on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last week, Joywave is ready to present its distinct orbiting indie-electronic sound and will be backed up by openers Sasha Sloan and KOPPS.
Kaki King: The Neck is a Bridge to the Body – Friday, 8pm – The guitar becomes a canvas for a multimedia exhibit like no other at The ArtsCenter, as guitarist Kaki King presents her luminous musical exploration of the mythology of the instrument. Visual art, music and projection combine for a performance like no other!
Kevin Devine – Friday, 9pm – Indie rock, emo and post punk! Songwriter/musician Kevin Devine brings his solo acoustic set to Local 506, with opener The Old Sioux Summer.
Foundations of Watercolor – Saturday, 10:30am-1:30pm – Ever wanted to try your hand at watercolors? Now’s your chance! Grab a drink at Coco Bean Coffee as local artist Joy Meyer takes attendees through a series of hands-on demos and exercises designed to teach the beginnings of watercolor painting.
Abbey Road LIVE! Family Matinee – Saturday, 4pm – Athens-based band Abbey Road LIVE! wants to show you and your kids the magic of the Beatles at this all-ages family matinee. Come out to Cat’s Cradle to hear your favorite hits like “Yellow Submarine” and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”
UNC vs. Duke Watch Party – Saturday, 7:15-10:15pm – The classic rivalry – this time on the big screen! Come out to the Varsity Theatre this Saturday to watch UNC demolish Duke. Put on your Carolina blue and cheer on your favorite team.
Kidzu’s 12th Birthday Party – Sunday, 1-4pm – In honor of their 12th year entertaining and educating children, Kidzu Children’s Museum is offering free admission for a ton of neat workshops starting like kids’ yoga and balloon painting. There’ll even be birthday cake.
Annual Source of the Eno Pilgrimage – Sunday, 2pm – Down for a nice hike? The Eno River Association kicks off their Spring Wildflowers Hike Series with their yearly pilgrimage to the source of the Eno River. No gear or experience necessary; just make sure to reserve a spot.
