The State of the Arts – Thursday, 5:30pm – Hosted by the Orange County Arts Commission and the North Carolina Arts Council, this event at The ArtsCenter aims to inform the public of the impacts of art on the local economy. After the programming, stay for a cash bar, refreshments and entertainment from Big Fish author Daniel Wallace and more.
Music in the Village – Friday, 6pm – Come out to Meadowmont Village to hear bluegrass band String Beings in the final installment of the first Fridays music series. This event is free and family-friendly, so grab a few chairs and the kids for one last “summer” night out.
UNC Women’s Volleyball vs. Duke – Friday, 6:30pm – The Tar Heels take on the Blue Devils once again at Carmichael Arena to see who wears the better blue.
MANHATTAN SHORT – Friday, 8pm – The ArtsCenter presents this unique take on the film festival, where the same films are screened at similar festivals all around the world. Act as a judge and vote on the film submissions from around the world and then stick around to hear the winners announced from the MANHATTAN SHORT headquarters.
Improv Percolator – Friday, 8pm – Get ready to laugh at The ArtsCenter‘s event showcasing local improv teams, including students of Vinny Valdivia, Free, Loose and Naked, and Danny Canoe. The night will finish up with one of the Improv Percolator’s house teams for a night sure to make you giggle.
UNC Women’s Lacrosse vs. Notre Dame – Saturday, 10am – Forget to grab tickets to see the UNC Football team face Notre Dame? No worries, there is a different matchup between the Tar Heels and The Fighting Irish happening at Finley Fields.
Denise Kiernan at McIntyre’s Books – Saturday, 11am – New York Times best-selling author Denise Kiernan will be at McIntyre’s Books in Pittsboro discussing her new book, The Last Castle. The new novel is based on the story of Edith Stuyvesant Dresser and her experiences as the mistress of the Biltmore Estate.
Oktoberfest at Southern Season – Saturday, noon-3pm – Come out to Southern Season to celebrate Oktoberfest for free! This event features breweries, distributors and vendors from all over the U.S. as well as local businesses like Cackalacky and Carolina Brewery.
Tone Poems: The Photographs of Frank Hunter – Saturday, 3-5pm – Check out this event hosted by the Click! Photography Festival presenting the photographic works of Frank Hunter at The Framer’s Corner, focused on documentary photography and capturing landscapes.
Open House: Rare Photobooks from the Sloane Art Library Collection – Saturday, 3-5pm – Stop by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Sloane Art Library for the unique experience of browsing and handling their rare photobooks, including self-published books dating back to the 1960s as a part of the Click! Photography Festival.
Louie Palu: Keynote Lecture – Saturday, 6:30-7:30pm – Click! Photography Festival is partnering with the William and Ida Friday Center and the UNC School of Media and Journalism to present award winning documentary photographer Louie Palu. Louie has worked in Afghanistan, Ukraine and in the Mexican drug war, where his work often examines social political issues such as human rights, conflict and poverty.
Matinee Screenings of Kandahar/Ukraine Films by Louie Palu – Sunday, 1-3pm – Spend an afternoon at The Varsity viewing two free films by award-winning photographer and Click! Photography Festival keynote speaker Louie Palu about Kandahar and Ukraine, followed by a Q&A.
Al’s Burger Shack United for Puerto Rico Fundraiser – Sunday, 1-6pm – Enjoy live music, fresh food and fun drinks all in the name of giving. Al’s Burger Shack, Baxter Bar & Arcade, Belltree Speakeasy and Beer Study are teaming up to benefit United for Puerto Rico to help those in need as a result of the hurricane season. Al’s will be serving up a traditional Puerto Rican meal while Baxter Bar & Arcade and Belltree Speakeasy will offer Puerto Rican inspired drinks and Beer Study will do a tap takeover, with $1 from every pint donated.
Fun and Fundraiser – Sunday, 3-6pm – Southern Village is hosting this free event promised to be fun for the whole family, complete with music by The Nomads Band. Proceeds and donations from the event benefit the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC.
