Last Look at The Outwin – Thursday-Sunday – The Outwin: American Portraiture Today, an exhibit that has been showcased at the Ackland Art Museum all summer, will be leaving us on Sunday. On view from the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, The Ackland is the fourth and final stop and is the only Southeast location chosen to host the exhibition.
Southern Village Farmers’ Market – 3:30-7pm– Head down to Aberdeen Street in Southern Village to see a wonderful selection of fruits, veggies and other goodies, all from a variety of local farmers and vendors. This seasonal market is only available until September, so stop by while you have the chance!
Temples of Lung and Air – Thursday-Sunday, 7:30pm – Come out to Playmakers to see a poetry, rap and storytelling performance that touches upon race, whiteness, language and hip-hop as a global community. Writer, performer and UNC graduate Kane Smego draws on his experience as an international touring artist, youth educator and native of the American South in this virtuosic one-man show.
Friday
[TGI]Friday on the Green! – 7pm – Start off the weekend with Vinyl Revival and classic rock covers on the Southern Village Green! The music starts on the clock, and all are welcome.
Be Loud! – Friday and Saturday, 7pm – For their 5th anniversary, the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation is holding a weekend of music at Cat’s Cradle. Matthew Sweet will headline Friday night with a reunited The Right Profile and Surrender Human opening. Saturday night is anchored by the one and only Sex Police with Collapsis and The Veldt supporting. The event is $25 for one night and $40 for both, and all proceeds benefit the foundation.
Paperhand Puppet Intervention – Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 7pm – Enjoy this puppet theatre company’s 19th annual summer show, “In the Heart of Fire,” a handcrafted puppet pageant showcasing unique, giant, papier-mâché puppets complete with live music at Battle Park and Forest Theatre. Pack a picnic, bring the whole family and prepare to be amazed!
Yellow Submarine – 9pm – Don’t miss the 50th anniversary of this Beatles-inspired animated film sporting a new 4K digital restoration at the Chelsea Theater! Along with the special late-night showing, the theater will announce a new series of music concert films, classic and current, coming soon.
Saturday
Brewfest – 8am-noon – Come celebrate the partnership between local craft brewers and farmers at the Chapel Hill Farmers’ Market for free beer samples, along with a plethora of beer available to take home with you!
A Quiet Place – 8pm – Show up to the Southern Village Green for the first showing of The Lumina‘s outdoor movie series, “A Quiet Place,” a 2018 movie starring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. Tickets are $5. Feel free to bring food and drinks, but no glass bottles.
Sunday
History Tea – 3-4:30pm – Waltz on down to the Burwell School to enjoy an afternoon of tea and a presentation on North Carolina revolutionary history, presented by North Carolina native and renowned author Suzanne Adair.
Concert on the Green – 6-8pm – Enjoy the sounds of summer with this week’s iteration of Southern Village’s weekly summer concert series, featuring Mahalo Jazz! This concert supports TABLE, so along with whatever picnic you may bring for yourself, make sure to bring some extra food to give to the charity.
