The James Hunter Six – Thursday, 8pm – Get ready for a night of soul and rhythm at The ArtsCenter. Grammy-nominated English artist James Hunter’s voice evokes Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, but is natural and authentic in its own right. Famous fans of the band include Van Morrison and Allen Toussaint.
Pig Out For The Cure – Friday, noon-2pm – Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston will be holding a barbecue-plate fundraiser Pig Out For the Cure, selling barbecue plates from Gillis’s BBQ including pulled pork, fried chicken, hushpuppies, coleslaw and Southern-style green beans. Pre-ordered bbq plates are $10 and can be picked up at 1600 E. Franklin Street on Friday, October 13. The event benefits UNC Lineberger Patient & Family Resource Center.
Pop-Up Dinner at The Granary – Friday, 6pm – Head out to The Granary for its first first-ever pop-up dinner. The night will feature three courses, and with offerings such as tomato bisque, beef Wellington and butterscotch sticky toffee pudding, it’s sure to be a scrumptious evening. Seating is by reservation only and the event is $42 per person.
Visitations and FRANK:infocus @ FRANK Gallery – Friday, 6-9pm – Take part in the opening reception for a collaboration between artist Barbara Tyroler and award-winning poet Jaki Shelton Green. “Visitations” showcases a series of images of Jaki and her late daughter, Imani. The evening will include poetry and music from mahaloJazz. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online or at FRANK Gallery.
Wanderers Opening Reception – Friday, 6-9pm – Come out to celebrate a new exhibition at Light Art + Design. The collection of James Joyce paintings on canvas and wood depicting starscapes and misty mountain ranges will be on display until December 2.
Late Night With Roy – Friday, 7:30pm – It’s the unofficial start to the UNC Men’s Basketball season! Head out to the Dean E. Smith Center for a night of songs, dance and hoops. Get a first glimpse at new players during an intrasquad scrimmage. Roy Williams and the rest of the team will unveil their 2017 National Championship banner at the free event.
Run 4 Peace – Saturday, 9am-noon – Take part in an afternoon of racing and fun at the second annual Run 4 Peace held by Unity Center of Peace. There will be a 4K run and one-mile walk. Start the morning with donuts, tea and coffee from a food truck on site. Funds raised will help support HomeStart, which provides 24-hour emergency and longer-term housing and services to homeless women and families in Orange County.
UNC Football vs. Virginia – Saturday, 3:30pm – Celebrate Carolina Family Weekend 2017 by watching the Tar Heels take on the Virginia Cavaliers at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
Kilometers for The Kids 5K and Fun Run – Sunday, 8am – Join Carolina for the Kids for a fun-filled and inspiring morning. Participants of all ages are welcome to take part in a 5K or Fun Run. There will be pre and post-race festivities and light refreshments served at McCorkle Place. All proceeds go to helping the patients and families at UNC Children’s Hospital. Registration is still available until October 12 at 8pm.
Fun and Fundraiser – Sunday, 3-6pm – Southern Village is hosting this free event promised to be fun for the whole family, complete with music by The Nomads Band. Proceeds and donations from the event benefit the Children’s Cochlear Implant Center at UNC.
Sip + Savor – Sunday, 3:30pm – This wine and food experience takes over Durham Performing Arts Center’s three floors with North Carolina’s finest restaurants and culinary talents like Jujube’s Charlie Deal, Crossroads Chapel Hill’s Brandon Sharp
and Acme’s Kevin Callaghan. Become a connoisseur with the help of sommeliers, sample wine from around the globe and learn why a certain wine pairs well with a particular dish. A portion of the proceeds will go to nonprofit Keep Durham Beautiful.
TABLE’s Empty Bowls – Sunday, 3:30pm – TABLE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to feeding local hungry kids, hosts its annual fundraising dinner again this year at Carrboro’s Weaver Street Market, featuring live music and a hearty meal of soup, bread and dessert. Guests who purchase a $30 ticket will also take home a locally made pottery bowl.
