In our July/August issue, four restaurants earned the highest marks from readers for going above and beyond when it comes to treating them right. We asked a few readers to spill – “What is it about the winning restaurants that makes them so outstanding?”

Kitchen is our go-to place for date night or with a small group. The food and drink is wonderfully tasty, varied, healthy and plentiful. It is a real value compared to many of the other fine-dining choices in the Triangle. But what truly sets Kitchen apart is Sue and Dick [Barrows], the hostess and chef [both are also owners], who always warmly greet us on arrival and check up with us after the meal. The staff is helpful, well informed and attentive without being obtrusive. We love Kitchen.”

“The Fearrington House Restaurant is a true gem. The service staff is incredibly superb: extremely knowledgeable, very well trained, customer friendly and great representatives of the restaurant. The food is extraordinary in taste, quality, seasonality and appearance. Chef Colin Bedford and his team produce world-class meals every day. I have had the opportunity to dine in many of the finest restaurants in the world, and the food and service at the Fearrington House are at the top of the list.”

“We have been coming to Lantern for more than 10 years. To say we’ve never had a bad meal there is a vast understatement, and what keeps us coming back is the consistent high quality of their food and their attentive and knowledgeable wait staff. We have celebrated many occasions and have shared numerous sublime meals with friends in the front-of-house restaurant, but our favorite [thing] is to grab a seat at the swanky back bar on a less busy weekday evening. … Despite being consistently named one of the top restaurants in the Triangle and beyond, Lantern remains a place of welcoming hospitality without as much as an ounce of snootiness or arrogance. Now if they only offered their rosewater-infused coconut cake year round… “

“I find the diversity of the menu that Chef Ben [Guaman] creates each and every week to be a big factor in making eating at the Governors Club Lakeview Room such an awesome experience. The attentiveness of each and every member of the staff is equally impressive and makes our family feel like we are dining with friends. There are many favorite dishes, but for an entree the shrimp oscar and peach-glazed pork chops as well as the tuna tataki salad special are some standouts to try at least once. … Fine dining at a very reasonable price is what makes the value of Governors Club truly a cut above.”
