Ellen Surprises a Northside Teacher

Jordie Kerwin had hopes of being in the audience for Ellen DeGeneres’s Mother’s Day show, so she wrote a letter about how much she has wanted to be a mom, how teaching kindergarten at Northside Elementary has fulfilled her desire to be around children and how grateful she is to be expecting a little girl in July with her husband, Patrick Kerwin. (Jordie and Patrick were high school sweethearts, graduating from Chapel Hill High in 2007.)

She didn’t make it into the show’s audience. Seats were, of course, limited. But she got all the same giveaways – about $7,000 in value – as those lucky audience members this week when a stroller, car seat, Pack ‘n Play, Go-Pro, high chair, a year’s supply of diapers and wipes, and more appeared on her doorstep, courtesy of Ellen’s team.

“We called to make sure this was real,” Jordie says. “They said my letter was what made them pick me.”
