@cattalescatcafe works to find loving, forever homes for cats while providing a safe, happy environment while they wait to find their perfect person. Co-owners Ilene Speizer and Katy Poitras have facilitated nearly 700 adoptions since opening the West Franklin Street cafe on Valentine’s Day in 2019.

The cafe partners with @beautifultogethersanctuary to identify cats at shelters in urgent need of a second chance, then provides much-needed care and places cats with foster families before facilitating quality, long-term adoptions. The cafe setting provides a space for anyone who loves animals to soak up an adorable visit among the cats and, in turn, socialize them to humans and make them more adoptable.

Thanks to a grant from Orange County Economic Development, @cattalescatcafe was able to purchase traps and equipment to support a new program to assist community members in the trapping, neutering, vaccinating and releasing (TNVR) of community cats – those who live in small colonies and are generally friendly but unadoptable. Cat Tales hopes to develop additional programs in partnership with Orange County Animal Services and @independentanimalrescue to educate Orange County residents and train volunteers in TNVR.

The Orange County Grant programs accept online applications quarterly to support small business and agriculture operations.

We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Joe Nassif, second from left, who served as mayor of Chapel Hill from 1979-1985. He had a long career as an architect, served on the Orange County Board of Commissioners and the Chapel Hill Town Council (then the Board of Aldermen) and coached youth football with the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department. @philorch kicks off @carolinaperformingarts ‘23/24 season at UNC’s Memorial Hall on Sept. 20 and 21! 🎉🎻 Led by music and artistic director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, each performance features a unique program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the group’s groundbreaking trip as the first American orchestra to perform in Beijing, China. 🇨🇳 🎼

📅 On Sept. 20, soloist David Kim joins the orchestra to perform Anna Clyne’s meditative new work, “This Moment,” as well as Tchaikovsky’s famous violin concerto and Florence Price’s Symphony No. 3. 🎶

🌍 On Sept. 21, the orchestra explores migration stories and the complex nature of its own global history. Guzheng player Wu Fei and oud player Shanir Blumenkranz join the group to open the evening with “Hello Gold Mountain,” Wu’s requiem honoring the Jewish community’s experiences in Shanghai during WWII. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 – the anchor work of its 1973 performance in Beijing.🌟
