Shannon Media Inc., the publishers of Durham Magazine, Chapel Hill MagazineChatham Magazine and Heart of NC Weddings are looking for a few editorial interns to work remotely for the winter (Nov 30-early Jan) and/or spring semester.

Our interns will get great experience and insight into the editorial process. Interns work on assignments for all four magazines (and some of our special publications like the Visitors and Relocation Guides). They are responsible for a lot of fact-checking and uploading print content online, as well as writing blogs about local topics and event roundups. There are opportunities to get social media and WordPress experience and write short print pieces like calendars, weddings and engagements.

Internship details:

–10 hours per week (specific days and hours are up to you), working remotely
–We do not pay our interns, but we’ll work with students so they can get school credit.
Winter internship to run weeks of Nov. 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 14, Jan 4 and Jan. 11. (We are closed Dec. 24-Jan 1.)
Spring internship to run Jan. 18 through May 5.

The ideal intern will be creative, organized, self-motivated and detail-oriented with a passion for the communities we represent. It’s important that our interns are proactive in letting us know if they need any help and are good communicators. We’re very flexible if interns need to change their hours one week – we just ask for some notice if possible and that they make up the hours another day or week. We love when interns ask questions and make note of any instructions for the tasks they are given! We’re a small crew so this is a great environment to pitch ideas for stories or blogs. The internship is truly a great opportunity to flex the skills interns already have and also learn a lot.

Requirements:

  • Previous internship or college publication experience strongly preferred
  • Writing and blogging skills
  • Knowledge of AP Style and strong grammar and editing skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • An obsessive attention to detail and commitment to high quality and accuracy.
  • A familiarity with our publications (Hint: you can read them on our websites!)
