The careful planning that Ian Kirven did before his first date with Samantha Shaw at Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews near UNC, Samantha’s alma mater, proved how well he understood her even before they met. The date encompassed all she loved most, namely literature and tea. Soon, Ian joined the list of favorites – in fact, he took the top spot.
Less than a year later, the couple decided they were ready to share space and busy schedules, with Ian teaching science at Durham School of the Arts and Samantha teaching English at Carrboro High School. One day, while working on home renovations, Samantha expressed that she knew wholeheartedly how “right” a life with Ian was. He proposed spontaneously with a stunning sapphire ring on March 23, 2025.
On March 21, 2026, Ian and Samantha exchanged vows in their own Durham backyard in the midst of freshly bloomed tulips and mid-morning sun. The festivities reflected the couple’s commitment to simple joys, with antique mug wedding favors, table runners made of book pages and unique thank you cards, crafted by the bride. The investment of loved ones was found in everything from handmade bouquets created by Samantha’s aunt, Marie Shaw, to veil embroidery done by friend Josie Malone of Josie Malone’s So-so Sewing. Attendees enjoyed catering from Brandwein’s Bagels and miniature honey pots gifted from the groom’s parents’ beehives.
Though the day was filled with endless activity, the couple continued to profess their love in stolen glances. Ian recounted that in those fleeting exchanges: “Sam’s smile and gentle laugh were the only things in the world.”
