Arts Night at Chapel Hill Public Library – Thursday, 6-8pm – Cadence, UNC’s all-female acapella group, will perform at Chapel Hill Public Library along with three spoken word poets in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Ackland Film Forum – Thursday, 7-8pm – Ackland Art Museum will show “Beasts of No Nation”, a film that tells the story of an African child soldier in the midst of a civil war. The event is free, and there will be an introduction by Gregg Flaxman of the UNC English & Comparative Literature department.
Women’s Soccer: UNC vs. Florida State – Thursday, 7pm – Come and cheer for the Tar Heels at Fetzer Field on South Road. Tickets are $5, or admission is free for UNC students with a student ID.
The Crucible – Thursday-Saturday, 7:30pm; Sunday, 2pm – Get in the Halloween mood this weekend with PlayMakers’ rendition of Arthur Miller’s masterful play which has been gripping audiences for 40 years now.
Pumpkins in the BOOtanical Garden – Friday, 5:30-8pm – Bring your own pre-carved nature themed pumpkin to the North Carolina Botanical Garden and enter it into a contest! Then, feel free to wander the garden to view other pumpkins and meet live critters. Potion-making, candy catapult designing, and leaf art will be available along with treats and prizes. Costume-wearing is encouraged! All proceeds will benefit the Wonder Connection program for hospitalized children & teens. Tickets: $8; children 3 and under are free. There’s a $1 discount for bringing a pumpkin!
Book ’em! Costume Party – Friday, 7:30-11pm – Head to The Carolina Club for a Roaring ’20s themed costume party. There will be jazz music, drinks, gaming tables and the Silent and Live Auctions! Tickets are $125 per person, or $200 for a couple.
Carolina Skies: Scare-olina – Friday, 8pm and Sunday, 3:30pm – Morehead Planetarium and Science Center will host a Halloween-themed version of their classic star show. Learn about stars, constellations and more through ancient legends that feature plenty of monsters and mayhem! The Friday show is for adults and teens, and the Sunday show is the family edition.
Hillsborough Spirits Tours – Friday, 8-8:40 pm and Saturday, 5-8:40 pm – Take a haunted tour through Hillsborough’s historic district and meet the ghosts of Orange County! Tours start at the Hillsborough Visitors Center and last a little more than an hour. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 11 and younger.
Thrills n’ Chills Moonlight Tour – Friday, 8-9pm – Meet at the UNC Visitors’ Center for a nighttime tour of campus accompanied by spooky ghost stories and more.
Sussan Deyhim: The House is Black Media Project – Friday, 8pm – Iranian-American performance artist and composer Sussan Deyhim will present her multimedia masterpiece “The House is Black” at Memorial Hall. The project focuses on Iranian contemporary arts and the influence of Forough Farrokhzad.
Gabrielle Jewelry Trunk Show – Saturday, 10am-6pm – Drop by Whilden on South Elliot Road to toast with designer Gabe Bratton, visiting from her home base of San Francisco with a variety of new pieces, including a new collection of collar necklaces.
Tiger CHill Carnival – Saturday, 11am-3pm – Join Chapel Hill High School for food, games, crafts and more. Carnival games sponsored by student clubs will include a cake walk, face painting, robot driving and dodgeball. Don’t forget to wear your Halloween costume and join the parade at noon; prizes will be awarded for the best costume! Tickets for food and activities will be sold at the carnival’s entrance, and all proceeds will benefit activities at Chapel Hill High School.
Vivian Howard at Flyleaf Books – Saturday, 4pm – Vivian Howard will stop by Flyleaf on her Food Truck Tour to celebrate the release of her new cookbook. Order a signed copy of her book online, or buy one at the event.
Spooky Movie Night – Saturday, 6:30pm – This kid-friendly event at Carrboro Century Center features a screening of “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit.” Concessions will be available; arrive early for a good seat.
Halloween Spooktacular – Sunday, 1-5pm – The Sundays in Hillsborough series continues with this Halloween celebration featuring live music, carnival games, a costume contest, parade and more! Carriage rides are available from the Visitors’ Center until 4 pm. The concert is held on the Old Courthouse Lawn, and is free of charge.
Autumn in the Garden Concert – Sunday, 2:30-4:30pm – The Village Band of Chapel Hill will perform at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. The concert is free, though preregistration is required.
Pass the Spinach Please – Sunday, 5:30-7pm – Preservation Chapel Hill presents Kimberly Kyser, daughter of PCH co-founder Georgia Kyser, at Horace Williams House. Ms. Kyser will tell stories of life in early Chapel Hill; wine and hors d’ oeuvres will be served.
After Dark Tour of Old Town Cemetery – Sunday, 5:30-7:30pm – Historian and archaeologist Dr. Ken Ostrand will lead a nighttime tour of the Old Town Cemetery, one of North Carolina’s oldest and most historic burial grounds. The tour will begin at the Hillsborough Visitors Center. Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. Be sure to bring your own flashlight!
