Downtown Market

Like many downtown dwellers, my husband and I were anxiously awaiting the opening of Mediterranean Market. We absolutely love living off of Franklin Street but always wished there was a place to quickly grab ingredients – half-and-half for our morning coffee, eggs that a recipe requires and some produce. I grew up knowing these shops to be bodegas, where you could grab a few groceries while getting a pretty awesome deli sandwich, but will settle for the lovely named market here in the South (and the best Mediterranean food next door).

The first week it opened, I was planning to make flank steak to celebrate our friends’ recent engagement. I realized that I needed just one more lime and thought it was the perfect time to check out the new market. Unfortunately, they did not have a lime that day, but I was pleasantly surprised by the offerings within the space. Local dairy, a nice array of produce, plenty of herbs and spices and large bags of dried beans, lentils and seeds graced the shelves and cold cases. When I went to inquire about the lime, they apologized and had me write the request on a list.

The next week, we grabbed a quick dinner at Med Deli, and I hopped over to the Market to snap the picture above. They already carried limes! Now that was impressive. If you have yet to check out Med Deli’s newest offering, make sure to do so. It’s wonderful to have a place downtown for us home cooks that truly caters to the community. And if you don’t feel like cooking? Med Deli is our most favorite place to grab a quick, delicious, balanced meal.
